What sugar-free gum does, why xylitol is often singled out, and what it cannot do.
Why saliva is the point
Chewing increases salivary flow several times over. Saliva neutralises acid, clears residual food, and supplies the calcium and phosphate that allow softened enamel to reharden. Doing this deliberately after a meal shortens the period during which the mouth sits at a damaging pH.
This is also why gum fits neatly into the timing problem: brushing immediately after eating is not advisable, but doing nothing leaves the acid in place. Gum occupies exactly that gap.
Xylitol
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that oral bacteria cannot ferment into acid, and there is reasonable evidence that it reduces levels of Streptococcus mutans. Whether xylitol delivers a benefit beyond the saliva stimulation of chewing itself is less settled than product marketing implies. Choosing a xylitol gum is sensible; expecting it to work as a treatment is not.
The limits
- It does not remove plaque between teeth — only interdental brushes or floss do that.
- It does not deliver fluoride.
- Sugar-containing gum has the opposite effect: check the label rather than assuming.
- If you have jaw joint pain, clicking or muscle tenderness, constant chewing can make symptoms worse.
